DDL n. 2688/2017: “Disposizioni per prevenire la manipolazione dell’informazione online, garantire la trasparenza sul web e incentivare l’alfabetizzazione mediatica”

ITALIAN ANTI-FAKE BILL

The bill proposes a fine of € 5.000 for fake news reporting; “hate campaigns against individuals” or stories “aimed at undermining the democratic process” would merit a fine € 10.000. News items that cause “alarm to the public” or “damage the public interest” would be punishable by up to one year in jail.

Print media would be exempt from the legislation.

Operators of any online news outlets would have to register with authorities before opening a blog or a discussion forum, and they would have to monitor information transmitted, particularly with regard to content to which users express widespread and sudden attention.
